Klx 300 Jetting

Recommended Posts

My friend has a klx 300 (2003) and the bike is completely stock. What can he do to the carb for re-jetting (ie. main jet and pilot jet changes or needle change/adjustment) plus opening up the air box on top to get more power out of the bike.

The cheapest mod for the carb is to replace the California spec. needle with a 49 state needle. Or, for around $55. he can get and install a Dynojet carb kit. The Dynojet kit will improve the throttle response quite a bit.

Only after the needle has been replaced, remove the air box lid and the restrictor plate (butt plug) on the end of the muffler.

To emphasize what Bruce said, DO NOT uncork the bike with the airbox lid removal and buttplug removal before you replace the needle. The stock CA needle is not adjustable, is extremely lean to gain green sticker status, and with the exhaust and airbox opened up will become dangerously lean. The process should be thought of as one complete step - rejet carb, toss airbox lid and butt plug. You'll like the bike a LOT better after you do this. If you don't do the dynojet kit (and I highly suggest that you DO do it), you might try going up to a 132 main jet while you're in the carb. Also, to adjust the pilot screw, you need to drill out the cap that covers the pilot screw. It's on the bottom of the carb - manifold side. There's a cap that is covering the adjustment. The adjustment should be around 2 to 2.5 turns out.

Double ditto. The free Mods with the Dyno Jet will really wake up the KLX. I've since added the FSW Header and Big Gun Race Series silencer (why do they call it that :) ). What a difference!!! You should do it... you'll like it.
