rattling forks?

Recommended Posts

I just pulled the forks off my '04 yz250f and noticed that when I shake them a little they rattle. Sounds like the spring is clanking around in there. Is this normal or should the spring have some preload on it?

Thanks

Should have some preload. Take them apart and re assemble using the service manual to make sure you have every part installed. I'm guessing that item 3 on page 5-28 on the 03 YZ250F service manual is missing.

stockers dont come with preload washers. Chances are if they are stockers you have sacked them and it's time to buy new ones. They really dont use the best metal available for stockers.

I have noticed this on my 04 450 and on my buddies 05 450 when I serviced the forks. It is normal, when the fork is fully extended the spring does rattle a bit.

if you do replace the internals go with Factory Connection - I am very happy with their work.

No, its not normal. Mine nor my friends 250F has never done that.

When you have the forks off the bike and they are fully extended there is not enough preload on them to keep the springs from rattling against the spring guide. You have to shake them back and forth to get them to do it and you would never be able to duplicate this when they are mounted on the bike but they will rattle when you shake them like this. Try next time you have them off for service. Now if you have something freely rattling that sounds like something is loose you may have a problem.

I replaced the stock springs with factory connection springs and they still rattle, I believe it is normal. The new springs were only about 1/16-1/8'' longer than the stockers. Oh well, now I have a new set of springs, wheather or not it will make a difference I dont know.

Every fork I have pulled off a bike, when there is no load on it at all and when shaked has rattled. This is even on a brand new bike I was having the suspension done on. It only had about an hour on it. It is normal. No load and the springs will rattle when shaken.. :)
