does it fire after a few kicks and then stall or die as soon as you touch the throttle?

If so go up on the pilot. I would get both a 58 and 60.

You do not have to remove the carb to replace the pilot jet!!

Remove the seat and tank

Unclip the throttle cables from the frame

Drain the carb

Loosen the intake and air box clamps

Rotate the carb bowl toward the left side of the bike and remove the drain and overflow black plastic tubes. (if carb won't rotate enough disconnect the throttle cables)

Remove the three bowl screws and bowl

Change the pilot

Use a dab of grease to hold the main jet baffle in place

Put the bowl back on etc.
