Engine rebuilding, which components?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm considering a 1998 KLX300 that aparently has a tapping sound, from what I've read this is probably the timing chain. The price isn't bad so I figure if I get this bike I could use the spare money to work on the engine - timing chain, star gear, cams (both?). Is there any other components I should be looking at replacing while it's open? It has about 4,500 miles.

Personally, I'd look at the valves and consider replacing them with kibblewhite valves and springs. Replace the timing chain, that and the valves are most likely where your "ticking" is coming from. With the bike apart that far, I'd check the piston and rings. If it's got 4500 hard trail miles, they are probably starting to go out of spec. I just had ESP do the exact same thing to my motor - SS valves and HD springs, new piston and rings, new cam chain. Ran me about $900 or so. Also, check the idler gear while you're at it and regrease the steering stem and linkage bearings. Good luck.
