13 vs. 14 tooth counter shaft sprocket?


A friend suggested that I go to 13 tooth counter shaft sprocket on my 300R. I have two questions: What will I gain? And how much of a pain in the butt is it to do? Thanks

not that much of a pain we did this on my cousins honda 250 you take off the plate where the counter sprocket is. Then take and loosen the wheel so you will have slack on the chain then take off the counter sprocket and put the new one on and then put everything back to the way it was. Or you can take the master link off of the chain and remove it and then take the plate off and then the counter sprocket. Which ever you decide. you will get more power under your @$$ is what you get lol you will really notice a difference in power after you get it.

You will gain a snappier throttle response. Quicker acceleration. The ability to loft the front end easier in higher gearing. And a lower 1st gear for creeping through rocks and highly technical sections of trail.

You will loose top speed. If you ride a lot of highway or if you find yourself tapped out in 6th for a substantial part of your rides, you may not like the 13T. Otherwise, IMO it's a no brainer. Cheap. Do it!

The install is easy. Loosen the rear axle, push the rear wheel as far forward as it goes, derail the chain, pull off the CS cover, pop off the circlip and swap em out. It's a 15 minute job.

When you change to a 13 tooth front do you need to change the rear sprocket as well?

You may need to change the rear sprocket and chain if they have a fair amount of wear. If they're in good nick, you don't have to worry about them.

I have 13/50 and find it a little annoying on the road.. but I only ride the road about 5% of the time. When I get off road and ride the trials it's fine.. When I ride slow technical stuff it's great... and for accelerating up mountains it's awesome.

You may need to change gears a little more often, but not much, being a four stroke.

if you're riding hilly terrain and you're not very experienced, or your bike is not modified with a pumper carb or 330 kit, the 13t is pretty handy. i found i could climb more stuff cuz i could start using 2nd gear on steep hills and maintain more momentum, where with the 14t 1st gear was too low and 2nd was too high for the bike to pull.

since i put on a pumper carb and 330 kit, i went back to the 14, and then to a 15t since i'm riding faster and slightly more open terrain now.

Buy it at your local cycle shop. They should be less than $15. If you have a KLX300, be sure to get the sprocket for YOUR BIKES MODEL YEAR. I think it was in 2003 that they changed them.

My bike didn't have one either. There is a handy little chain breaking tool that I used. I guess you could get it at most motercycle shops. It's a little hand held press that pushes a pin out of the chain to take it apart. You could get a master link and put it back together. I ended up buying a new chain and rear sprocket and changed everything when I switched to the 13t front sprocket.

That puzzled me too a couple of years ago. You can either get a chain breaker and install a master link on you old chain or (better idea due to age of present chain) grind off the rivets on one of the links and get a new chain and sprockets. Another possibility is to remove all of your rear linkage and swingarm to remove the chain. GOOD TIME to grease ALL of the linkage bushings and bearings.

What confused me was the owners manual shows a photo with a master link :) Anyway, the 13 tooth is installed :D , next is the uni air filter, dynojet kit, and header.

Brewster, I bought my 2001 brand new from a dealer about 4 months ago. I got a very good price. Thanks for the advice anyway, I'll need more of it in the future.


I changed mine without breaking the chain apart or loosening the wheel (actually I didn't technically change it, I took it off to do the shift star fix and re-installed it). Just take off the circlip and pull the sprocket and chain toward you a bit until it clears the shaft, then slide the sprocket rearward out of the chain. Reverse for install.

And no, my chain isn't too loose. It's new and in spec.

You're right, you don't need to take the chain off - just derail it - to change out the countershaft sproket. Do it often this way.

Beware that the "just remove the circlip and derail" method may not work on 2003 and later bikes. In 2003, kawi changed the output shaft to the same spline pattern as a yz/kx 250. The newer output shaft is larger in diameter and has a fine spline pattern. Interesting that kawi didn't tell anyone about this change... So, I discovered this after returning a few sprockets that didn't fit my bike. This output shaft has a large thread-on retainer nut (usually torqued on by a gorilla) with a safety washer, and you might need an impact gun to loosen this retaining nut. Then, you may discover that the new output shaft is too long to get the sprocket off it with a slackened chain. When you re=tighten the sprocket retaining nut, it is not necessary to torque it back on to "gorilla" specs - the safety washer is supposed to be there to keep the nut in place. Then, in the future you can loosen the nut by holding the rr brake and using an extension handle on your ratchet. So... To all owners of 2003 and later klx 300's who want to do the countershaft sprocket change, please take note....

      Hello guys,New to the forum.
      Quick question,I have a 1994 klx650c i recently purchased and am in the process of upgrading it.
      Have a trial tech vapor speedo ready to fit,however just wondering about the stock instrument gauges etc.
      Is it literally a case of unplugging the old dash and fitting the Vapor? Is the Dash used to complete the stock wiring circuit? e.g-if i unplug it and leave it unplugged is it going to effect the running of the bike? What about the dash lights,how would i go about wiring these up?
      electrics really isn't my strong point,got the basics covered but way too complicated for me.
      any help greatly appreciated,any more info you need please feel free to ask.

      Hello, This is my first post and I'm new to TT.  I recently acquired a 2008 KLR650 (which by the way I absolutely love) and I'm working on adjusting my valves, I already measured its clearances and found this helpful online calculator: http://www.carguy.org/klr650/shims.html however I'm unsure of what the shim factory setting size is and it is essential to get the right shims. Does anybody know what the factory settings are?

      A super duper THANKS for all the help, laughs, and fun I've had here, and the bike I put together based on advice and lots and lots of reading material you've provided on what is the best vehicle forum I've ever encountered (been on many over the years). . 
      Just when my bike was absolutely the bike I wanted it to be, my riding buddy (who is my father in law) bounced of his DRZ well up 4610 here in Oregon and broke his leg, and good. Tib/fib  job requiring rods, screws, plates, and a kitchen sink to put back together. If it wasn't for the MX boots I got him, and "forced" him to wear....there would have been all sorts of nastiness sticking out of the skin. No doubt about it, as both lower bones broke at sharp angles making spears inside his leg. As it was, everything was contained. He is going to be down for quite some time. I bought my drz to ride with him initially as he had a KLR650 and had an interest in backroad and moderate trail riding. On our first trip out (Brown's camp easy/mod trails) after about 10 times picking up his KLR with over-inflated 50/50 tires (mine stayed on 2 wheels all day long) he said "I need a bike like yours". Within a week he had his DRZ too! Then over the fall and winter we did all the mods and fixes to get them ready for this spring/summer.  It was kind of a miracle I even convinced my wife to let me get a dual sport bike. I'm 50 now, and have a degenerative vision disease called RP. Basically, I'm missing quite a bit of my vision field, but have decent vision straight ahead (unlike macular degeneration). I'm not in denial that good/full  vision is important for safe motorcycle riding on the street...and the reason I'm a 90/10 dirt/street guy. My argument was that we won't get hurt just poking around the woods, old man style, with occasional pavement work to connect trails (thus the need for dual sport over dirt bike).  Well, my father in law shot that theory down, but good!  He has dealt with so much pain over the last month, and met several dual sport riders in for riding injuries (some that make his look like a kid's day camp) that he decided he is out of the game. Unfortunately for me, that means I'm out of the game too. My wife is so worried I'm going to get injured badly, that it's not worth the fight. I don't want her and my daughter stressed and worried every time I go riding. My father in law was doing great on the roads and trails we've been riding. And just loved riding the DRZ. But he's 70 and looking at Jeep Wranglers with lift/tires for his forest adventures going forward. Not a bad call imo.  So...I've sold 2 DRZ's and a KLR in about 1 week (here in Portland OR, I could have sold 4 more DRZ's in the same time if I had them!).  His 1100 Honda shadow cruiser is on C.L. now as he is cleaning out the stable completely. Sad, sad day. It's only been a month since our last ride and I'm already missing the dirt big time. Even sold my daughters doodle bug. Oh well, life goes on.
