OT - Anyone know wtf this is?
It is in SF bay i guess near san jose. Looks fscking insane.Google just added sattelite imagry support so ive been just exploring around, and this is just the weirest thing ive ever seen in my life.
Take a look...zoom in a bit to see the different patterns...the water itself looks like a pastel painting..this area looks like a piccaso...just unreal.

It is an image taken with a differnt spectrum of wave length - (ie) infrared, microwave etc - versus the standard light wavelength spectrum.
No, it isnt. That is a normal picture. It is wild!
Look at this, these are buildings right next to it.

Definitely a normal spectrum picture. I've never seen anything like it.
I found my house...and ooooh look there is area 51...and hey....I think I just found Amelia Erharts body!

Haha, it is wild isnt it? amazing detail and so fast. Good ole google.
I'm not so sure what is so amazing about satelite pictuers - welcome to the 21st century.
By looking at some of the colors , I believe the pictue is using a slightly off wave length and or some lense filters.
The satellite pics arent whats amazing..how fast it is and how nice to use is pretty neet but thats just that.
Whats amazing is the colours and patterns of all that! Does it look nothing like that in person? Is it water or land? Blows my mind.
You see those multi-colored pools/fields when you fly into San Francisco Int'l (RWY28's). Kinda pretty.
Dan
Yeah..Stuff like this ting..

Wild.
ian is right, they are salt evaporators. i work at Sun right next to some of those. the look purty, but they smell like sh*t. literally.

Dude...I sit at my laptop wirelessly in my office and within 2-3 seconds and a few keystrokes I can zoom in to any level of a pretty clear picture of any place on earth from space.
Sorry I guess your definition of amazing is a little bit different from mine

Well then welcom to the 21st to you too.
It is a bit amazing to think about, but in reality we've just linked a couple technologies together that have been around for a while.
Cameras, satelites, and the internet.
I think the poster was amazed about the visualizations of the pictuers -maygbe he just got some good shrooms.
I think it's weird that I can never find my keys but I can find out what some coloured blobs are 1/3 of the way round the earth from me.
Why can't you type "keys" into Google and it says "on the kitchen worktop under the dish cloth" or "stonewashed Wranglers, front left pocket"?
Ian

ha, mine would say...
Did you mean: dumbass
1. in your pocket
2. in your hands

That is a great idea. Probably in our lifetime - find you keys, the remote, sunglasses, your kid.....
What is more amazing:
1) Seeing this salelite picture on teh internet or:
2) Being able to log into a porno site while sitting at a starbucks from your wireless lap top and watch a live sex show.
Pretty much the same thing as seeing a satelite picture -minus satelite maybe.
I used to fly over those pools every week coming home from working out of town. They really are that color. Amazing when you are just a couple thousand feet above!
You see them when your flying into SFO from the south. Lot's of runoff in the southbay the day of sat. image too. makes for lousy fishin
JJ
I used to ride my bicycle on the levees that run around and through those evaporator ponds. The variety of colors are from the assorted bacteria that thrive in the different alkaline levels present in each pool. The colors are kinda' like a giant Ph strip for testing acidity.
Smells pretty ripe in the summer!
