MainLine Posted April 13, 2005 Hello, Looking to get a little more umph out of my KLR. Considering Carb jetting, airbox mods & air filters (uni vs. K&N?) and exhaust. I changed out the front sprocket to a 16 tooth to get some more top end and it made a huge difference but now i need some more power captain! Does anyone have any thoughts on the jetting, air box & filter and the exhaust? Not looking to spend a fortune on a laser or big gun etc... the SuperTrapp seems reasonably priced though? thanks for your thoughts, biGjOhn a.k.a. MainLine a.k.a. Sabre Posted April 13, 2005 Maybe not what you're wanting to hear...Kawasaki sells the KLR with about as much power as you're going to get. Other than some minor carb tweaks to enrichen the overly-lean mixture, you will find that virtually all owners admit that there just aren't any reserve ponies in the old girl. It's a 20-year-old design, tried and true and reliable as hell, but if you're looking for a bunch of power, it's not the bike to choose. Search the archives here and on KLR sites and you'll see for yourself. No doubt though, it's a fantastic machine with a huge worldwide cult of loyal followers (many of whom also own other bikes to satisfy their speed/power needs!). tenntomatohead Posted April 13, 2005 I have a 650 and I got the supertrapp muffler and pipe, took out the baffles, loud but seems to have some more performance. I am interested to find out about the sprocket change. I want to go to the 16 in front and drop 2 teeth in the rear. Give me some input.
MainLine Posted April 14, 2005 So... ...not really too much more that I can get out of her huh? that's a little disappointing but I still love the ride. Anyone know about how much more there is to get out of it with jetting, airBox / filter mods and aft. mkt. muffler? is it not even worth it? thanks,
Pro_Marinero Posted April 14, 2005 https://thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=243490 Improved pull throughout the band
manitoujoe Posted August 31, 2005 I exchanged the 15 tooth sprocket up front with a 16 and the higher gear ratio is just what I wanted on pavement. Now I'm turning 5Krpm at 80mph instead of turning nearly 6K and wishing I had another gear! If you go one tooth extra up front and two less in the back, you will have a very much higher gear ratio with much less "jump" in first gear. Good luck, Joe
velosapiens Posted August 31, 2005 i put a supertrapp on mine. by the time i got back from lapaz the noise was bugging the crap out of me so i sold it and put the stocker back on. i was not overly impressed with the quality of the supertrapp unit either. JMC Posted September 1, 2005 Where did you guys get a 16 tooth gear? My dealer says he can't find one.
bigfatgreenbike Posted September 5, 2005 Sunstar makes one. Sprocket Specialists makes one. My experience was that dealers know nothing about the huge aftermarket for the KLR. Try here (check out the site then call. Don't order online as you miss out on free advice/ tips, all these folks are good about answering questions) arrowheadmotorsports.com dual-star.com happy-trail.com Devon
manitoujoe Posted September 18, 2005 I did a "buy it now" on a set of new case-hardend sprockets and X-Ring chain (added one tooth to the drive sprocket) from a terrific seller on eBay. Great communications, great price, terrific service, and fast shipping! Couldn't be happier with the "kit"! You might want to check out my "garage" for additional info. Here is what old "dirtparts" (Greg Herpin) has to say about the "kit" which he sells for $87.99 plus $8.00 S&H via his eBay store: "This "buy it now" is for a complete RK Chain Kit for your KLR650. This kit includes the highest quality chain and sprockets available today. Kit Includes a RK 520 XSO X-ring chain for maximum durability and ultimate strength. X-ring technology insures the least amount of chain stretch and maximum oiling protection. Rk chains also offers a one year warranty against breaking and stretching, what other manufacture offers that?? Kit also includes both front and rear case hardened steel sprockets, so you can stop changing your sprockets like your underwear! This auction is for standard gearing, other gearing options available please email with needs. DON'T BE FOOLED BY OTHER AUCTIONS OFFERING NO NAME CHAIN AND SPROCKETS!!!!" Trust me, Greg ain't lying! It is a great kit for a great price. Here is Greg's email address! Greg Herpin <dirtparts@yahoo.com> He answered every one of my emails quickly and he knew what I needed before I did plus he takes PayPal credit cards which was a plus for me. safe man! lmi675 Posted September 26, 2005 I want a quiet aftermarket pipe and looked at the SuperTrapp IDS2 Quiet Series. Was yours the IDS2? So far I like the FMF Q Series the best though. Just can't find anyone who's had experience or encounters with either. I would appreciate your opinion. (95 KLR650)

north88 Posted April 6, 2008 I've installed the Supertrapp IDS2 it's quiet with the minimum 4 dics installed....too quiet for me (not much over stock)so I run it with all the (12) discs. Watch when you install it, put spacers in to keep it away from rear fender or it will melt, but overall it installs very easy

Not exactly my idea of fun, more out of necessity / practicality. All of my traveling was I-5 from Seattle to Anaheim and back. I would highly suggest you add a throttle lock! I did, saved my arm for sure! I also had 70 pounds of gear with me, all secured / supported from the factory 22 pound rated cargo rack... If you will be traveling "fast" I would suggest checking your oil at every stop. My 08 used 3.5 quarts round trip. 1.5 of 10W-40 and 2 of 20W-50. Admittedly I was traveling well above the speed limit, and for extended periods of time (one leg of the trip went 100mph for an hour, got 30.5mpg that leg of the trip). Piveteau Posted June 18, 2008 I just got thru doing the Airbox Mods(pulled snorkel, Uni filter) drilled the slide, shimmed the needle, and adjusted screw out on the bottom. My muffler is a John Deere replacement from Tractor Supply. Got a local muffler shop to build me a mid pipe, it fits and breathes great.
