Does seat foam break down?

My foam is pretty intact, but 20 years old. Does it "pack down", or get compressed some? Got a new seat cover coming. Would new foam be any more comfortable?

Oh and is there anything "special" about OEM foam? or could an upholstry shop match it with no trouble?

Thanks

Yes, the foam will pack down. All polymers have what is called compression set; that is they do not retain their original shape over time/temperature/other envirnomental factors. Most seat foams are pretty good, but they all eventually lose their shape and ability to dampen and rebound.
