20w50 or 10w40

For a 2005 CRF250 the manual calls for 10w40 engine oil. So when I'm buying the Honda oil 2 different dealerships parts guys have said to run the 20w50. I told them that's not what the manual says, but they said that these bikes run hot and could use the extra protection of the 20w50.

Now it's time to buy oil again and I'm not sure what weight to get.

IMO if you run it hard and ambient temps are 80+ go for the 20/50

15w40

Yeah I do run it pretty hard, and this summer in So Cal should be pretty warm.

If it needs better protection, use better oil, not heavier weight. AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil 10W-40.

I'm running Honda HP w/molly in the motor and Honda 80w85 (tall red bottle) in the tranny.

Amsoil 20-50 motorcycle oil is what they recommend for extreme conditions. Their 10-40 is also 2nd to non.

alot of good oils out there and the key is to change it alot before it breaks down.

If you are changing it often (which you should), a good 10W40 should be fine. I use either Bel-Ray or Silkolene.

20w50= hot weather 10w40=cold weather :naughty:

15w40 = AllTheTime
