yamaha bike designations are suffixed by a single letter denoting year of manufacture.

the letter "O" (oh) is skipped due to similarity to the number "0" (zero). same for "Q".

e.g.

WR250FN = 2001

WR250FP = 2002

WR250FR = 2003

WR250FS = 2004

WR250FT = 2005

WR250FU = 2006

Hehe... I like the idea of the '06.

"I've got a WR250 so FU!" :naughty:

Fender used to serialize their guitars the same way. Through the late seventies (starting around '76 or '77, eighties, and the nineties, the serial numbers started with the decade and year, so S7 was a '77, E4 was an '84, etc...

I never looked to see what they did in 2000.

There were some variations in the '90s with Korean and Mexican production.

So... What's Yamaha going to do in 2012 when they run out of letters?
