Public Invited to Review Proposed Inventoried Roadless Area Boundaries

Revision of Forest Plans for the Colville, Okanogan, and Wenatchee National Forests is entering a new phase of planning as analysis of inventoried roadless areas becomes center stage. Since the 1970s, management of inventoried roadless areas located on national forests has generated keen public interest. The Forest Service is inviting the public to review its proposals for boundaries of inventoried roadless areas. Validating inventory and adjusting boundaries of inventoried roadless areas is the first step in evaluating an inventoried roadless area’s wilderness potential.

The public can fully participate in this activity by visiting our web site listed above or by calling 509-664-9210 and requesting an information packet. However, five public meetings are being scheduled across the state to provide interested people a chance to review inventoried roadless area boundaries in person. The meeting schedule follows.

This public participation opportunity is focused only on review of roadless areas boundaries, not on what kind of management direction the Forest Service should assign to an area, or whether it should be recommended for wilderness. Evaluation of a given area for wilderness recommendation/non-recommendation will occur later in the Forest Plan revision process. The public will have opportunity to participate in this evaluation at a later date.

Instead of attending a public meeting, people can also participate by visiting the Forest Plan Revision web site at www.fs.fed.us/r6/colville/cow . Proposed inventoried roadless boundaries are posted along with a comment form. A packet of maps and instructions are also available by calling 509-664-9210 or by writing the Forest Service at the address listed in the heading of this news release.

People who would like to suggest changes to inventoried roadless boundaries proposed by the Forest Service are asked to contact the Forest Service for directions and proper format. In order for your input to be of most use, we need to have your proposals related to inventoried roadless area boundaries to the Forest Service no later than August 15, 2005.
