Riding at Slades Park

Recommended Posts

Took the wife & kids riding yesterday at Slades in Surry Va, the place was pretty easy to find, just look for the big white sign about 7 miles south of Surry on rt 10. I had read a lot about this place and how in the past it was pretty much un-regulated with people doing some crazy things out there. Well they must have cleaned it up from the way it used to be, because the trails are all marked with arrows for directions, some of them are one-way and there's even some stop signs to keep you from doing something stupid. Looked to me like they've been adding some new trails lately cause theres several tight twisty ones that weren't worn much where you're running over lots of small tree stumps.

They've also got a track there for the big kids which is pretty much WOT riding with lots of small whoops and no jumps. This is the first place I've been able to hit full throttle in 6th on my new KLX 300. My kids stayed over on the kids track which was perfect for them - a half mile of track running thru an open field, enough to keep them interested for the day. I took a panoramic shot of it with my camera that turned out pretty cool (7 pics and a program that links all the pics into one). If you look closely you can see my son on his CRF50 four separate times in the pic 🙂http://members.cox.net/4x4racecar/SladesKidsTrack_m2.jpg

We spent 6 hours there riding and for $15 per bike it was well worth it. The owners even stopped by a few times to chat, wanting to make sure we were all having a good time. Real friendly people.

I've heard some good things about Slades park from several people; however I would have to disagree. Most of the riding is on a powerline and the trails in the woods are all torn up from the 4x4 quads. I drove down paid my fifteen dollars and left within a hour and a half, thats all it takes to hit the majority of the 12 miles of trails. The "kids track" is a flat field with a path around it and the soil is packed like asphalt. If you have nowhere else to ride and are jones'n possibly check it out, but I'd rather adjust my valves than ride there
