MotoGP Friday Update -- Hayden #1 in Practice!

Nicky Hayden sent the Laguna Seca crowd wild by leading the first day of practice for the Red Bull US Grand Prix in California this afternoon (Friday).

The former American Superbike Champion used his considerable knowledge of the daunting 2.243 miles Laguna Seca circuit to lead the way from former Laguna winner Australian Troy Bayliss with Repsol Honda team-mate Max Biaggi in third.

"It's nice to be fastest here at home - a real good feeling," smiled Nicky, who finished day one 0.223secs ahead of morning pace setter Bayliss. "It's started out great. The bike is working well and we have all made a pretty good guess from the start with all the settings - a good job from the team. We got some good Michelins that worked real well.

"Laguna is about how I remember it even though I haven't been here for three-years. It does seem a little smaller for a GP bike though and the straight that I remembered that seemed real long seems a little shorter now!" he added. "I'm just really enjoying myself here - hanging with my brothers and mixin' it with my people. It's real nice!"

Meanwhile, team-mate Biaggi overcame a mechanical problem to finish the day in third place – 0.314secs from the #69.

"The third best time of the day is satisfying for me. HRC Team did a very good job. Of course we can do much better, like all the others, because this track for us is completely new and full of secrets. The 1994 experience for me is a very far memory and today's bikes have nothing in common with the old two strokes.

"Laguna Seca must be accepted for what it is: we are in the USA and we cannot pretend it is a European track,” he added, presumably referring to those who have called the track dangerous.

"The circuit is surely exciting, with its up and downs and several blind points, where you don't see where you are putting your wheels. In this kind of track you've got to ride very clean and for this reason we are trying to make the bike as smooth as possible," he revealed.

Final free practice and qualifying takes place on Saturday.

It's about time Hayden did something in that series. He was starting to make America look bad.

He's been improving, though. I didn't catch last weekend's race, but the week before that he was pretty respectible. Plus, he finished ahead of Biaggi, which is important for him to keep his MotoGP ride for next year.... 🙂

Nicky is young and inexperienced on the Euro tracks. He's coming along and I read an interview with the one of the top Honda guys a while back saying that Nicky is not going anywhere. He said they realized they need to bring young guys along if they want a future champion and people like Edwards were just too old.

All I have to say is if Nicky can pull this one off it will boost his confidence a ton.

Man, this is a huge breakthru for Nicky. Yeh he's inexperienced still, but hes improving drastically. I think its gonna be on at 5 (eastern time) on speed channel. I like nicky and it would be nice to see an american win, but i hope Rossi will take everyone down. 🙂

Yeh, that sucks so much that oln cancelled the nationals. U'd think that more than enough people would be watching it, probably more motocross fans out there than rodeo nuts

Hold up, did I miss something? OLN cancelled the nationals? Or are they just not showing them during the Tour?

why do people have to post results to every race and related activity on the forums? Obviously we are all internet literate, and can find the info ourselves. I guess it just makes some people feel "important" that they think they saw it first.

why'd you read hte post, yea he should have put spoiler in there, and not put the result in the topic, but all he was talking about was practice, you should have known that a post talking about practice was gona talk about qualifying also.

Well, plus it's only a spoiler thread if the race isn't shown LIVE ON TV !! I can understand why some folks like to be surprised when they watch the next-day-delayed or 1-week-delayed race on TV. But MotoGP is live folks. No such thing as a spoiler thread in this case.

Go Nicky!! 🙂 :)
