High altitude pop - backfire

I normally ride around the 2k-4k altitude range. I had already richened up my jetting from stock. The bike seems to run pretty decent at those elevations with out any popping or backfiring. However I just returned from riding around the flagstaff area that is at least 6k plus. I notice that at times during de accell that the bike would pop / backfire. My thinking is that the bike should have become richer for the elevation change and this popping / backfiring is because of the extra fuel and not a lean condition. Does this sound right?
