headset or stearing stem

Recommended Posts

did i read my manual correctly? is the steering stem nut supposed to be tightened to 72 ft/lbs? this is more torque than the rear wheel axle nut and perhaps the highest torqued bolt on the bike

You dont want to torque the rear axle all that much because not only is the bolt relatively small in comparison to the steering stem it is also expected that the rear axle will be removed fairly frequently and possibly on the trail.

The steering stem is a large bolt and could be dangerous if it came off.

the stem needs to be good and tight because the bearings not only take a radially load but a thrust load. that is why it is a tapered roller bearing. the bearing need to be seated in the race with no chance of loosening while riding. even with suspension, think of the pounding to which the entire steering assembly is subjected.

Just finished greasing mine. Yes, 72 ft/lbs is correct for the top nut. The crown nut below that only gets 3.3 lbs as I recall.
