safety wire for grips

i looked in Home dePOT already.

anyone ever used zip tys?

cant wait for this weekend - im gonna do some catwalks and burnouts and maybe even some sweet air stunts!!

they should have it at home depot....or any bike shop...they dont make a kind specifically for grips i dont think, but safety wire is safety wire.

Most home improvement stores do not carry wire of that small a diameter. Look for an on-line bike store, or use the Chaparral link that somebody else posted.

I found some Stainless steel wire at sears for hanging pictures. It was about the same diameter as safety wire. Worked great.

Safety wire is required in many types of racing. It is used to insure that certain bolts do not come loose during a race. Some sanctioning bodies require certain bolts are safety wired to prevent parts from coming loose. I keep a can of it in my trailer and it does come in handy. In some cases it may work even better than duct tape.

Safety wire keeps the grips from spinning on the bars. No you can't use zip ties, unless you want to slit your wrists on the cut off end. I get mine at Cycle Gear, but any local bike shop should have it.

Safety wire is just stainless steel wire used to keep parts or fasteners in place.. Normall employed on vibration prone areas, but often as a secondary SAFETY measure on critical items.

Oil drain plugs on a race car/bike, brake fasteners, ect ect.

why would you need it as long as you glued your grips on good enough then it should be fine.

Even with grip glue wire is good security. Wet conditions can make glued grips come loose easily.

Zip ties don't work. I was riding with a guy who's grip came loose and we zip tied it back in place. He stated over and over again that the catches on the zip ties are somewhat uncomfortable.

I purchased a 1lb can of .032" stainless wire and a safety wire pliar from a local industrial supply company. It's enough wire to last forever.

And note that not all safety wire is made equally. Get a spool of good stainless steal wire from a motorcycle shop. The stuff you find in cheap tool stores can sometimes be crap (a few twists, and the wire snaps). For general wiring, you want 0.032" (32 mil) diameter wire. This'll do grips, bolts, whatever. For really fine detailed work (like small hoses or thin electrical wire boots, etc) get a spool of 0.020" (20 mil).

When wiring grips, I like to wire it in three different places (both ends and in the middle), and I wrap each wire around the grip twice. Snip the ends, bend and jam it into the rubber grip to hide it. And don't wire the grip super close to the bar end. Leave 3/4" to 1" space between the bar end and the wire. A good crash can rip the wire off the end of the grip if it's too close.

I find that wiring grips this way keep them from being torn to bits in a good crash on a hard packed track. And obviously, it can be a monsoon where your riding and the grips won't move.
