Just Bought a new 05 CRF450X

Recommended Posts

I just picked up my new 05 CRF450X yesterday. Brand new out of the box and it justs blows away my DRZ400 with a bunch of mods. Never going back to that DRZ.

Good move, I just sold my heavy cruiser (DRZ-S) last weekend. I'm still trying to decide between the KTM EXC and CRF/X 450s for my next woods ride.

Nice bike! I know with the DRZ forum there is a list of standard modifications. Is there any such list for these bikes or any recommendations?

I agree with Whiteman.

Lose the stock tires asap. The stock tires are so bad, they are almost dangerous.

Get a full skid plate:The Aluminum box tubing will crush, if you catch it on a rock.

Also: Do thread searches for "jetting", "suspension settings", etc.

The Motorsports network Reccomended mods work ok, if you are 185lbs or less, and not over 5'10".

Just ride it; I dare you not to smile in your helmet......

I just bought a new 450 X the end of June and now have aprox 175 miles on it, I agree the stock tires suck I cant afford to get rid of mine yet.I bought a Utah Moto skid plate for mine it is pretty thick and provides good coverage.Bought a air fuel screw, red shift lever, and 2 rotating style lever clamps for my brake and clutch from pit posse on ebay very happy with price and quality of those components from pit posse.Checked my valves at 120 miles and my exhaust were tight intakes were spot on but exhaust were .004 too tight reshimmed by putting at tdc as book stated and pulling rocker arm circlip and shaft.Love the bike so far it hasnt missed a beat!

What kind of tires did they put on the 05 X? My 06 R has Dunlop 756's which are very good tires for MX.

"Now you're just showin' off."

--Yes, I am.........and I don't even have a picture with the DR D pipe; more showing off to come.

"By the way, where did you get the yellow decal/plastic?"

--Decal Works.....

"What kind of tires did they put on the 05 X? "

--I believe it was a Dunlop-don't remember which ones; they were awful. No hook up in the rear at all, and major push in the front. Maxxis IT's now (for SoCal anyway).

The stock bike works great, if you don't go in sand, or chop the throttle much- just roll-it on.

The biggest differences were:

1. Jetting to match the airbox/pipe/pink wire mod; bike was transformed!

2. Suspension tuned to my weight (270, 6'4"); now it turns with confidence, doesn't wallow in corners, and no more low-sides!

3. Ergonomics changed to my height:

-lower foot pegs, higher bars, forward bars, levers with less required reach, taller/softer seat; Now I can standup all day and ride, or, sit down on rocky sections if I want.

4. DR D full system exhaust; Now there is serious torque, even from below idle. It will run easily with no throttle, just idle along in gear, and not stall!

OK, I just found my favorite thread. Same here with the DRZe. I like the bike's motor with the yosh pipe, but after getting the X 2 weeks ago, riding that thing is like riding a bike with a "hinge in the middle". I guess, I just passed up the abilities of the Z. When you start wondering how much of the Z stuff you could put into a RMZ chassis, its time for a new bike.

So far the X is AWESOME. I'm not sure I want more power - I'm not sure I want anthing else! :D 3rd gear trails on the Z are could now be done in 1st in the X!! Reminds me of a 2 stroke 250 but much much beefier and lower on the rpm scale. And I know the scale says there is only 13 lbs difference between the Z and the X, but if feels like 50! Especially in the super slow stuff.
