Will an oily silencer packing cause performance loss?

Recommended Posts

I bought a used Dr D exhaust system from a fellow TT'er. His rings went bad and he rode it anyways. He sent a lot of oil blow by through the exhaust which got absorbed by the silencer packing I'm sure. Well when I installed the pipe it smoked for a few rides but now it's fine. I plan on ordering the Race Tools repacking cartridge but just haven't got around to it. Any thoughts on the possibility of performance loss?

Thanks

There will be a performance loss do to loss of back pressure caused by the worn or soggy muffler packing, just re-pack it and she's as good as new!

*correct me if I'm wrong..

I agree with the last reply. No matter what an oil soaked packing is going to change the characteristics of the airflow thought the exhaust and I'd be willing to bet that it would take a turn for the worst. My guess is that it would compress the packing material resulting in a loss of back pressure in the exhaust.
