Chain Slack

Should chain slack be about the same as on a dirt setup? Is there any chance that Ill be able to use my stock chain having gone to either 14-42 or 14-44 gearing? The bike is an 02 CRF450R. Thanks in advance.

Yes, same as on dirt. On the CRF450 the swingarm pivot centerline is slightly below the countershaft sprocket centerline which means that the chain is at its tightest when it's on the lower chain roller. The more the suspension compresses the looser the chain gets. So basically you want to keep the chain adjusted a lot tighter than you would on other dirt bikes. If you don't it clanks around and wears out the chain slider and inside of the frame spar.

That is interesting, I did not know that. Do you know if the XR650R is the same way?
