LC4 Aluminum or Magnesium Engine Case Covers?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know whether a 2001 KTM LC4 640 has Aluminum or Magnesium engine case covers? A friend of mines Father-In-Law dropped his bike and the shifter cracked the case. We were wondering if we could weld up the crack. Any info would be appreciated.

I had this problem a few years ago. My LC4 dropped to the left side and :banghead: the shifter chacked the case and the clutch (because the engine was working...). I tryed to weld it but it's so difficult that the high temperatures made more leaks around the case than it had after the drop - it is Magnesium cover. I suggest you purchasing a new one and weld a small round plate behind the shifter to avoid another inconvenience like you had.

Everyone on this site recommends JB Weld. I cracked my case with the shifter in a crash and it was leaking. I took it off, cleaned it up, roughed up the inside surface and put on the ol' JB Weld. Hasn't leaked all summer. Just get a new gasket.
