oil filter

Recommended Posts

I went to tighten up the cover for my oil filter (xt350) only to find that the bottom middle bolt would not tighten up good. I ran it to see if it would hold the oil, but nope... there was a steady slow leak coming from the bottom. I hope its not all striped out, but what would you guys recommend me doing? Right now I have it all together. That bolt isn't an original either. The guy I got it from must have tried to rig it. Anyway I'm looking for a permanent fix here (seeing as I will need to take this off over and over again over the years) Somethings striped out thats obvious. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Possibly you can drill out the hole, re-tap it, and install a Heli-Coil that is the proper thread size. Looking at the microfiche for an '86 XT350, the bolt looks to be a 6mm thread size, which is a common size that can be Heli-Coiled.

You'll just have to be extra careful not to let any metal shavings get hung up inside the oil filter area.
