mark4moto Posted October 15, 2005 I would like to test the ignition on my z50 and determine what is causing it not to spark. Any methods out there? It could be the coil or maybe the kill switch. So far I have tried grounding the plug on the head while kicking the bike and have only got a brief spark every five or so kicks.
dirtbkr188 Posted October 15, 2005 Install a new spark plug, install new points (if your Z is a '69 to '87), make sure they are properly set to work right, and see what you get then. Unplug the kill switch, the bike will run without it being hooked up. After you do all that, and if it still doesn't spark, find a friend with a similar bike, and try his coil, to see if yours is bad. If you have an '88 or newer Z, you can try a coil from the CRF/XR 50, a bike that also has a 12V CDI electrical system.
mark4moto Posted October 16, 2005 Sounds like a good plan. I tried to get to the points but my fly wheel puller won't fit in the slots on the ignition cover. Guess I'm shopping for another puller. Thank you.
dirtbkr188 Posted October 16, 2005 Here's the correct flywheel puller for your Z50R... http://www.motionpro.com/Docs/flywheel_pullers.html part #08-0026 The external threads on this puller are left-handed, as are the threads on the flywheel.
