Lowering a KTM???

Recommended Posts

I can ask later today. I bought a 400EXC last week and I'm supposed to pick it up later today or tomorrow morning. They are dropping the rear about 1 1/2" for me.

I'll ask the guys how it's done on a KTM....I know my friend lowered his wife's WR250 with a linkage bar.

:banghead: Thx for the info, now let me ask the stupid question, where is the "seal head" of the shock? Is this under the spring itself & do half to tear down the shock to install them?

Thx for all the help, I'm picking up my 400 this weekend.

One of my riding buddies has a KTM EXC. He was able to lower the rear of the bike by an 1" or 1.5" by cutting down the subframe and rewelding it. Then he got the EE seat and cut the foam on it. Makes it easier for him to get his feet on the ground and swing his leg over the bike as the fender slight points up. He had a hard to time clearing it before. He has not messed the suspension yet at all.

The spacer refferenced a couple pots above goes inside the shock, you need to send the shock to a specialist. Any lowering of the rear is going to make the bike steer like a toad unless you lower the front the same amount!

While there are extream cases (5'4" or less as an example) I would always recomend that you learn to ride the bike as engineered rather than mod the bike to fit you.

The spacers are to change the height of the "top out" of the forks/shock. It limits the ability of the unit to travel up.

It's roughly a 4 to 1 ratio of shock movement to swingarm movement. aka 4mm of movement of the shock would be 16mm of swingarm movement at the axle. (25mm is an inch)

On the shock, it needs to be disassabled , spacers inserted, shock reassebled.

On the forks, it needs to be disassabled, spring cut, top out spacers insert, then reassembled.

It's not for the guy who doesn't know how to suspension modifications to do it.
