xr6 harder to start w/ new choke plate

well, you guys freaked me out talking bout breaking the factory choke plate on my 98 xr600 i bought a couple of months ago. so i put on a Precision Concepts choke plate. now what use to be one kick starting on full choke now takes 5-8 kicks. did i do something wrong?? its been getting colder here (in the 40's and 50's) in Central Illinois so maybe thats got something to do with it.

I'd like to know too.

I have a new (to me) 87 xr600r.

Gotta get familiar with it.

Just changed the oil. Looked like tar in there.

Should it have water in it? These things don't have a water pump, right?

I think the oil was black with gray speckles.

ok, I'm just funnin' yall's. the oil was fine

When I installed mine the choke did not close all the way. I had to file it down a little bit so that it did not bind and would close all the way.

thanks for the quick reply. i'll check it tomorrow.

Choke flap aside, cold air means dense air, which means your air/fuel mixture is leaner than it was during the summer. If you have done any mods, like airbox, pipe etc... then a rejet will be in order. A larger pilot jet will ease your cold starting pains. Check around for jetting setups that people use with XR6's with similar mods as yours.

As for your choke flap, make sure it is installed properly and opens and closes without obstruction.
