Wider gear ratios?

Recommended Posts

A wider gear ratio will allow you to run a larger rear sprocket giving you more of a granny first gear without sacrificing top end or you can run a stock sprocket and increase top end speed if your type of riding warrants. I see that as the major advantage.

Baja designs in san diago makes a gear set for the crf 450

what it actually does it make 3-4-5th gear wider, and by putting on a 53T rear sproket you get a real low granny gear, unless you needed a realy low gear i think the 52 would be a better choice. i ride a little bit of everything, and find with the 53 its just a little to low,

should be bajadesigns.com ifnot look it up in google. you have to grind into the case a little. its alot of work but worth it if you wanna ride everything without being on the clutch alot. i still have alot of fun at tracks with it.

I just want to tell you that when I first got my 450 I thought the same thing, but I have not changed anything and have grown right into the current stock ratios.I you want to feel what it is like to have a different ratio try to get a friend that has the 450x model. after riding that ( trying to ignore the extra weight and all of the smog that loads up the motor) I think you will aree with me.

Hi I am new to the CRF and I just got a 06 450r and was wandering what I have to do to have a wider gear ratio, so theres less shifting. Pros and cons please

i really like the bike with a 14 tooth ft sprocket and a 48 rear ,

this lets the bike pull way longer in 2nd and 3rd .( it eliminates alot of shifting and lets me concentrate on my lines more efficiently , and the power is better used,--not to mention the 2nd gear starts are really nice )

it really is a good set up for alot of different tracks.

you might try it and see ?

That's what you are running? Man, I gotta ride your bike. That's funky.

i rode my bike on the track on sunday for the first time in a while, and it is still geared for how i like it in the hills. 13-52. i loved it. i rode the whole track in 4th and 5th. i used 4th for the sharper turns and just let the z-start do its thing. i would almost rap out 5th in a couple of the straights, and i'm sure some of you way fast guys would, but for my ability it was about perfect.

Why destroy the effectiveness of your bike by running that tight of gearing? For MX 2nd gear should be used for starts and tighter turns and smaller jumps out of said tight turns. 3rd gear should be used for the majority of the track, including faster turns, most jumps and shorter straights. 4th gear should be reserved for longer straights, some fast jumps and longer sets of whoops. I agree that everyone should tailor gearing to their riding style and track to a point, but too big of a change is nothing more than a crutch to compensate for improper technique. By getting too far away from the stock settings, you are ruining the brilliant power that your Honda makes. Spread it out, feel the wonderous torque curve. Just my opnion anyway, take it how you will. ?

Had you said 14/52, I wouldn't have freaked out so badly.

it sounds funny but it really lets the motor torque stay in the meat much longer ,

and way less shifting at all the tracks,

you can run canyon and speedworld in just two gears ,( saving 11 shifts each lap )

one down for all the corners , and one up on all the straights and the timing section,

acp is where i will use 4th and thats only on those long uphill triples ,( and you can still do them in 3rd if you want , you do not have to use 4th, but its cool to overjump that one long up hill triple )

and the thing is so fast and pulls so long in 3rd and 4th it is just to cool ?

when these things first cam out in 02 and they had that cr 250 gearing on the thing it was just stupid ( 13 50 ) and then guys put a 51 or 52 on it ?

it is a wast to run this motor like that ,

hell you miss all that great torque , :bonk:

Doug henry and or jimmy buttons very first 4 stroke only had 2 gears in the thing and it was set up to work just like this , 1 down for the corners and one up for the straights

Do you happen to have an extra 14 tooth laying around? I'd like to give it a shot. I need to buy a new chain and sprockets, so I want to keep my options open.

actually the 14 i am using is an old one i pulled off my 87(wide ratio kitted ) cr 250 ? ,

its kinda hurt, but it was an original honda sprocket from those old wide ratio kits you could get in 86 and 87 and they did last the longest,

i do need to get acoupple more of these 14's ,

i will order two from sprocket specialists today so you can try it ! ?

Don't order one just for me. What if I don't like it? I don't want to be a pain in your arse.

I also put a 14 tooth after my first ride on my 05 450R. Much better pulls in each gear and less shifting on the track or trail. Did the same thing on my 450X, too. It even worked good in the rockpiles they call trails in Colorado...
