New XR200 owner

My son just picked up a running 1990 XR200 for $100!

Here are the problems so far:

1. Smokes more than my 2 stroke outboard, but runs and idles good.

2. Kick starter skips when kicked, but will start with a short stroke.

I suppose I will have to do a complete motor overhaul, pistons rings valves etc. I've ordered a shop manual but would like some recommendations on where to get parts and any other experiences you experts have had.

Also... What is the cable going from the bottom crankase to the top valve area? I thought maybe a compression release, but can't wait for my manual to find out.

(if youre thinking about the same cable as me) its a compression release tahts connected to the kick start so it's easier ? i think www.xrsonly.com MAYBE thats the correct URL someone correct me if i am wrong.

Probably could use some new rings. Should clear the smoke. Also your kick starter gear could be worn. If you're not too shy about taking things apart pull the side cover off and you can either change the sprocket or grind the tips back.

Check on ebay , I have seen Weisco piston and rings fo 88.00 listed for sale. I have a 2001 xr200 and love it. The shocks nedd to be a little stiffer for serious jumpting but for a woods bike you can't beat it. The cable you asked about is a compression release. Miy cable is broke but it starts easily enough for me.
