85 xr 600 rear bearings

does the bearing on the brake side need to be pressed on to the axle housing?

I'm not certain about an 85, but I think all the XR's are pretty much the same. When I replaced my rear wheel bearings, I just tapped them in. It's a little easier if you put them in the freezer so they get cold and shrink a tiny bit. If you get the hub warm, it will usually just drop in. If you have to tap it in, make sure to only hit the outer race of the bearing. If you hit the inner race it will damage the bearing. However, for the last few taps you may need to use something else, don't want the old one to get stuck in there too. When the bearing seats the sound of the tapping will change.
