TE 510 Reliability and Durability???

Recommended Posts

Who has experience with the reliability / durability of the 510? What are the typical weakpoints? Broke down 3 times (yes right, that is 100%) with my Husabergs ? on trips /rallys in Africa, kinda sick of it!! Thanks for detailed replies

EXCKiller

Now I have been shopping around a bit for the availability of a 510, questioning dealers and so forth. Also asked what mods thery would consider for multi-day desert rallies. One guy says.... get a WR..... and continues for 15min how good and reliable they are compared to HVA, Bergs, KTM etc.... Makes me think..

We have been racing the TE 510 for 18 months now.

About 9000kms on the '05 and about 4 months and 1500 miles on the '06

Heres whats gone wrong on the 05:

1) The front wheel bearing went bad. It is possible its from the high pressure water sprayer-not sure.

2) The cluth slave went bad. It is possible that it is from to much oil in the resevoir. In a crash we broke the resevoir and when we replaced it, we did put to much oil in--plus we didnt 'burp' the system afterwards. SO the higher pressure might have been the problem. Not sure.

3) Stator shorted out. This was caused by build up of metalic dust on the magnet. This was 100% our fault--we only cleaned the flywheel once in all those miles. It should be cleaned every 2000kms.

4) Broken mount on the case saver. Not sure if it craked in a crash, or what.

But it is not as strong a mount as i would like.

On the '06 we lost the cap on the overflow bottle-then lost the fluid-then overheated the bike--which then melted the bottle, and melted the 'Y' junction of the two radiator hoses. Not good. This all happened at night, after 13 hours on the bike, riding cross country miles from any trail, in Mexico!

Well that is all. All of these problems have been reported on other bikes here on thumpertalk. Its possible each is more from lack of maintenance than from the bike. Not saying the Husqvarna is perfect. But it is as far as i can tell the most durable and reliable of the modern four strokes. They have refined it for several years and its one strong dog. This expereince convinced us it is a great choice for the Dakar Rallye! ?

Got my 510 in December and have put over 1000 miles on it so far with out a single problem. Stock jetting and factory suspension settings.

Oh, almost forgot, the horn mount busted and left it hanging by the wires.

I haven't checked if this is covered under the warranty. ?

To bounce off the original question, what kind pf prices are you seeing for this bike? The new dealer in ATL quoted almost $8K OTD!!!

In CA the 450/510s are going for about $8k OTD. Demand is high and bikes are selling easily for full MSRP.

On the original question, my TE450 has 800 miles with zero trouble thus far. I'm a lousy mechanic and even I find the Husky easy to maintain.

About 3000 miles on my 05 with one problem that magically fixed itself, I only had 1st gear and neutral for about a half hour. I do have a Rekluse in it and let a friend (damn Honda riders) ride it and think he might have been shifting it hard and made something stick in the tranny, one other TTer had this happen as well and it went away and never happened again. I adjusted the valves to the loose end of spec when it had 500 miles on it and they have not moved since.

4 of us locally are using 3 510's and one 450 as motards and riding them hard. So far two of them encountered a leaky gasket up around the starter motor that needed replacing and one of the 510's has had both wheel rims crack at the welds. The first was replaced under warranty and I think this time he's just saying THWI and lacing on some Excells rather than go back for more "softies". The 450 got a crack in the alternator cover from something that no one can figure out and mine has 12 to 13 hours of running time with no issues at all other than a jammed shifting rachet pawl from a particle of metal in the oil.

Meanwhile the other local Katooms and Husabergs seem to spend more time in the shop then they do at the track.... and we won't even go into the guy here that has a TM with less than 10 hours on it in over a year of ownership thanks to mechanical issues.

"Steering Head Bearings will rust out if you don't seal up the stem lock slot."

Which part exactly are u talking about on sealing for the steering head bearings. My mine are shot from the previous owner not properly greasing them and tightening everything down. Is the nut under the top clamp what you are talking about thumper???

There is a slot in the steering stem that takes the pin for the steering lock,if you hang your petrol tank breather hose down the stem when you lean the bike over fuel will flow out the hose down the stem and some will flow out this slot and wash the grease

out of the lower bearing, easy fix run the hose down the side of the frame under the wiring that goes to the head light and try and find a rubber plug to cap the hole at the top of the stem, the later is for anal types like me.

Rubber plug seems like a good idea and so does the not running the over flow hose into the stem.

But for the record the over flow hose comes with a one way check valve so fuel cannot come out - at least on my 06 te250.
