Shock Removal...

Can the rear shock be removes without removing the subframe/airbox/wiring harness? Like removing the shock linkage and pulling it out the bottom?

You can partially remove the subframe to get the rear shock out, but removing the subframe on the XR650R is a piece of cake and very quick to do if the wiring is completely stock. Removing the rear shock for that matter only takes about 15 to 20 minutes if that. I don't think I've ever timed myself, but I think I could remove the rear subframe and the rear shock in ~10 minutes if I wanted to (assuming stock wiring). If there's a dual sport kit installed, then sorting out the wiring may take some time if it's not clearly marked or keyed.

If you're just needing to adjust your sag, you can loosen the lock ring with a long punch or screwdriver via hammer. Once the lock ring is loose, then twist the spring in the direction you want the adjuster to turn. The adjuster usually turns when the spring turns because of the spring pre-loading it.

I agree, once you have done it a few times it is real easy. Leave the air box, fender, everything in the sub frame. I move it to the side of the bike and then remove the shock.

U mean like remove the shock linkage and then pivot the subframe back and pull it out the top?.... Yes. Piece of cake.

I actually hadn't thought of that. Can you leave the wires connected that way? I need to grease the linkage anyway, so I was thinking remove the linkage and pull it out the bottom. Problem is we've got those wires in the wiring harness really connected/taped well for Baja and I hate to have to undo them (it's wired for the 250 watt stator).

I'll be trying it this evening and letting you all know how it turns out. :ride:

OK, by far the easiest way to get the shock off is to remove the muffler and top bolt on the subframe, then pivot the subframe back, remove the shock bolts and slide the shock out the top. Didn't need to disconnect a single wire- just the crankcase vent tube that attatches to the airbox. Thanks Max Power for that tip.

My bad. Yes, the crankcase tube, top bolt and muffler. Sooo embarrassed. :ride:
