DRZ400s tapping noise

Recommended Posts

Ive got a 2001 DRZ400s model and there's a tapping noise under rev's, its had a manual cam chain tensioner fitted but may need adjusting, ive also never had the valve gap adjusted, can they be adjusted and if so any idea of the clearence on inlet and exhaust (remember its the S model if that makes a difference)

Failing that is there a common problem with the DRZ, i was happy with it until a mate said one day can i hear a tapping, ever since then ive had a twitch everytime i ride it.

Did a bit of searching and found this.

These specs are directly from Suzuki PR:

Suzuki DR-Z400E

Valve Lift Intake: 8.9mm

Valve Lift Exhaust: 9.3mm

Intake Open: 14 BTDC

Intake Close: 66 ABDC

Exhaust Open: 65 BBDC

Exhaust Close: 29 ATDC

Suzuki DR-Z400S

Valve Lift Intake: 8.5mm

Valve Lift Exhaust: 8.2mm

Intake Open: 20 BTDC

Intake Close: 55 ABDC

Exhaust Open: 56 BBDC

Exhaust Close: 19 ATDC

any idea how these are adjusted is it shims or the old fashioned way with a screwdriver and a feeler gauge.

They are the cam timing specs, NOT the clearance.

Clearance is, inlet 0.1mm to 0.2mm and exhaust is 0.2mm to 0.3mm.

If you are going to check them regularly then go for min clearance, if you want to adjust them and forget, go for max. clearance.

To minimise the effect, keep it revving and don't let it lug at low revs.

These are adjusted by swapping shims.

How to do it.

But I suggest getting a workshop manual first.

The tapping noise is probably just piston slap, this is normal on modern short stroke big singles.

I don't know what piston slap is but my clearances are as close to perfect as I could get them and I have a mcct and it still ticks. I guess what i'm saying is that it's probably not your valves that are off. But they are easy to adjust so it wouldn't hurt to check 'em.

p.s. do a search on google to see if you can find a copy of the drz400s manual to download off of the internet. You might get lucky!
