hot start? what is it?

Recommended Posts

When you shut down your 4 stroke, there is residual fuel in the cylinder and the motor will be hard to start (flooded). So then you say to yourself, I'll just twist the throttle to give it some extra air to unflood it. The only problem with that is when you twist the throttle, the accelerator pump shoots a shot of fuel and it gets even more flooded. So the hot start lever is connected to the carburetor. When you pull the lever, it opens a valve that lets in air without shooting more fuel into the motor. All it does is create a vacuum leak to unflood the motor.

On two strokes you could hold the throttle open some to give it more air, because there was no accelerator pump to shoot fuel.
