'01 XR4 clutch issue.

Recommended Posts

I just replaced the clutch basket and clutch plates, and I thought I had the cable adjusted right. The problem of the bike slamming when put into gear is gone, but now I can't get it into neutral without shutting it off.

Did I put something together wrong, or is the cable way out of adjustment? I did not put a new cable on it...yet.

Thanks,

Chad

You should have between 1/8 and 3/16 of an inch of slack at the lever and if you have more than that you will not be dis-engaging the clutch enough. Check the slack before replacing the cable unless the cable is bad.

I didn't have problems with clunking but I could not find neutral with my old clutch and after replacing the plates it works great. Turns out my metal plates were badly glazed and it caused the clutch to drag.
