Torque for fork pinch bolts?

Recommended Posts

I looked in the owners manual and I think it said 18. But that was too much and it stretched a bolt. Did I have a bad bolt or is that the wrong torque?

my sm610 workshop manual says 16ft lbs I think

mine were all just a bit more than finger tight from the factory, one even fell out within the first few hundred miles

The setting in my manual says 18.4ft/lb

I've seen the thread strip out of the ally fork clamps but the bolt shouldnt stretch.

I use a bend bar type torque wrench and take the bolts a bit at a time untill they stop turning as the wrench pointer reaches the the torque figure.

Only use a light oil (if any) on the threads and check the adjacent bolt because as the clamp nips together it has the effect of making the other one come loose again!

just in case, if anyone is not familiar when using a torque wrench always pull on it when your hand is in the middle of the grip area,

for example if you held it half way down the wrench you will end up with double the torque or strip the thread.
