Rims bike specific?

Recommended Posts

Are rims bike specific or is it just the hub? Just asking because I was going to get a set of dirt wheels for my SM but Pro-Wheel doesn't list a rear rim (or was it a front) for a DRZ.

I though you just had to specify spoke holes, width and diameter and you're good?

rims arent bike specific, spokes and hubs are. unless you get one of the excel packages where all you change is the mounting bracket for the rotor and sprocket, that way if you buy a different brand bike you can reuse the wheels just by changing the mounting plates.

Rims are not bike specific in one respect BUT you still have to have the correct rim to lace to the hub.

Good example: just last week a guy brought a rim to my house to be laced. I barely got started when I realized the hub called for more spokes then there were holes in the rim.

Sometimes the angle of the spokes entering the rim can also be wrong.

Your best bet is to make sure you have a rim that is made for your bike. Don't guess at it.
