Electric brakes

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at an older trailer that has "emergencey " brakes. The plug only has six plugs. Can these brakes also work with an electric brake set up?

Thanks

What do you mean by "emergency brakes"? Are they surge brakes (hydraulic ones that uses a master cylinder mounted to the tongue?

Well there is no master cylinder. When the trailer breaks away from the tow vehicle, a small "black box" is activated and the brakes on the trailer are applied.

It's not a hydraulic system, it's electrical. It doesn't seem to be wired into the connector plug and able to get a signal from a brake controller in the truck.

Yes, you can wire this with a six prong plug. That wire is supposed to be connected to the tow vehicle (not the plug, somewhere else), so in case of breakaway, that wire will pull the switch, which will apply the brakes, stopping the trailer. It IS NOT supposed to be wired into the brake controller, or even the electrical system. Where I work, we use electic braked trailers and that is how the system is supposed to be wired. Good luck (they can be a pain in the rear end  )
