Swansea/Salt Tram/Cerro Gordo (Lonepine)

Recommended Posts

Anybody done this ride recently? With flash floods, trail conditions can change instantly up there. We rode it last fall and it was passable, even for the kids on their 90's. Planning to do it again next weekend. We are mostly on utility quads that can go anywhere, but there is a stock jeep Wrangler going (descent tires, but no lift or winch or anything else). You think it would have any problems?

Inyo Mountains, east of Lonepine. Lonepine is in the Owens Valley on Hwy 395, on the way from LA to Mammoth.

From Lonepine take Hwy 136 east (toward Death Valley) about 10 miles to Keeler. We park at Keeler, then ride back up Hwy 136 for a couple of miles (illegally) to Swansea (we do drop the kids off a Swansea first, so they don't have to ride on the highway). From Swansea you head up into the mountains, and end up riding along the ridge at 9,000+ feet (nice an cool, even when the valley is hot!). We ride along the ridge to the Salt Tram and then over to Cerro Gordo (you can take a tour if you call ahead), then down the Yellow Grade road and back to Keeler. Give yourself a whole day.

If you want the short ride, start at Keeler and just ride up the Yellow Grade to Cerro Gordo.

Dirt bike would do great. My experience has been that dirt bikes handle technical terrain pretty well. There are some soft sandy areas at the bottom, where you might wallow a bit, but up top it gets better.

We are riding this Saturday, if you would like to join us. Lots of kids going, so it will be a slow ride.
