Broken Femur Update

Recommended Posts

It's been three months since my last surgery on my leg. If you don't remember, we removed the screw in my hip to allow the break to compress. There was a space in the break that was not filling up.

I don't have the latest X-Rays, but the top of the femur bone HAS slid down, and the unhealed section of the break appears to be mending. As a result of the femur break, my left leg is now one inch shorter then my right leg. I had shoe lifts added to my shoes, and I am walking very close to normal.

I have not added a lift to my riding boots. When I ride with the lifted boots, I sit very uneven on the seat (I can feel my hips out of alignment), but I am even standing on the pegs. If I ride without the lift, I am a bit straighter while sitting (still a bit uneven though), but I feel really uneven standing. Also, the lift makes me have to shift with my heel, not my toe (I cannot rotate the shift lever up on my bike).

Having said all that, here's my question; Which do you think would be better to ride with, a lift? a non-lift? or maybe a partial lift?

Also, are there any treatments, surgical or non-surgical, that could help strech my left leg? Even if it's only part of that inch, anything would help. I would like to do some research to see if there is anything to help.

When I broke my femur they made my leg about an inch too short also, so 10 days later they took out the top screw and pulled it down to match, unfortunately 2 months later it was still not fusing so onto surgery number three, big slice down the side instead of a little one on the knee, take out the pins & rod, put in a plate from the side with a dozen pins & doc put in some pellets to aid healing. no idea what they were but I'm sure a surgeon would know, just had an x-ray & it looks good, I was okayed to try a cane. my break was 4 pieces, with the rod only the two main femur were aligned, the smaller pieces weren't caught so I had that gap that wouldn't let it fuse, once he put the plate in he was able to place one of those smaller pieces where it belonged, I think thats why my leg ended up the right length, all the puzzle pieces but one came together. my last surgey was June 19, I think thats pretty quick healing, when things are done right.

Did you have a clean break or were there extra parts like mine??

P.S. if I had to do it over, I'd go with the plate right away, I had a choice, I chose the least invasive way & it cost 2 additional surgeries & two wasted months, & those two months were alot of pain & constant narcotic's.. just my $02.00

My break was more pieces than could be counted on the Xray. I flew off the bike at around 60mph & landed feet first like an arrow. The center 4 inches of my left femur collapsed into literally splinters. I have been through 3 surgeries; The first was the initial rod. The second was a rod replacement & bone graph. And the third was removing the hip screw to compress a space in the break, (sounds just like yours).

My sugeon is still talking about plates, but he does not want to go to that extreme yet. At this point, it looks as though the break has mended, there are still some sharp points that need to smooth over.

I was never given an option on any of my surgeries. I never thought I'd end up being THAT uneven though. I really hope that plates are not my only option here.

I'm no authority on this, but to make your leg longer at this stage, wouldn't it require re-breaking your femur????, Damn just the thought of that makes me sick, it's a pain I never want to go thru again, of course you would be out at the time, but still..... I wish you luck, I tried two days of using a cane, but started feeling a little pain, so I'll give it another couple weeks,, My doc never mentioned how much pain I should allow, so even a little, I'm worried of re-injury, & extending my recovery even more..

P.S. nice thing about plates, your Doc can make the join nice & straight instead of that offset splintered look ya see in the X-ray

So is that it. Has your doc basically said "slip this in your shoe" and sent you away. I hope they have a plan long term to correct this.

How big is the limb length difference? It the broken on longer, or shorter?
