Sprockets needed

Recommended Posts

I have a 01 S that has been converted. I have read that 15/38

is the way to go. I need a little more top end for commute to

work. I have not had anyl uck finding a comlete kit with the correct

chain and both sprockets. I am a newbie to SMs as you can see.

Thanks in advance!

Sprocket specialists will cut any sprocket you want. You give them the base number and the number of teeth you want. I think they start theirs with 536-XX (front) 452-XX (rear). Check the base number though.

I have 15/38 on my converted S and like it. My rims are not standard so they stock 38's for them. At 70-75 it has a nice relaxed feel, not nearly so busy. You lose the second gear wheelies but it still is acceptable power in traffic at 75. I say that using GPS speeds not the stocker. Those speeds would be 75 - 80 on the stock speedometer. Mine stock with just the 3X3 I got 99 mph (~108 stock speedo) out of it with that gearing. Which equates to about 8400 ish RPM.

I got 3 mph more by wearing a street helmet instead of my MX helmet. Aero drag matters.

I do not think you can find a kit with a 38 rear sprocket. Most kits are geared for offroad use and use 47 or above. Best thing to do is to order your 38 direct from sprocket specialists, renthal or any other brand you fancy.
