Just blew my yz 400 f engine!

Recommended Posts

Here's the deal, the bike was running awesome today. I rode for about 2 hours and it was getting dark so I headed for the truck. I was in 5th about 85% throttle and the engine locked and I started to slide (at about 70 mph :applause: ) When she came to a stop I looked to see the damage and realized that the engine is destroyed :ride::applause: . I have no idea what happened. ? So here is my delema do I try and find a new engine and fix the bike or do I just part it out and get a newer one. (If anyone has an engine for sale pm me) I will post pics soon it really blew

here are some pics I promised:

same thing happend to me on my 426 i think im just goign to part it out mines just seized the kick starter just wont move i heard it will cost in the 2000's to fix

Don't be too hasty. A similar thing happened on my 03YZ450. Half throttle in 4th gear - back tire locked up. Could not move the kick starter. Ended up the oil pump shaft broke and dropped the gear into the tranny. No damage to the tranny only needed to replace the oil pump shaft. (While I was in there I did upgrade to the Hot Rod Crank).

No offense, but why do people take pictures that are completely out of focus and post them here? My eyes are killing me. At least retake them and post up some pics that we can actually see.

BTW - that sucks and I would just part it out on ebay and buy a new bike.

sorry my camera sucks and I didn't realize how bad they were I will try new ones later

There's nothing wrong with that. Just put some oil in and ride. ?

Seriously though, eBay is your friend. You can hold out a while and hope to find an engine, but you'll do better if you part it out and get something new (er).

Wow, thats a nasty mess ? Could you not hear any funny noises coming from the motor before that happened? You would think that with that kind of carnage, there would have been warning signs before she blew. Thats really sucks man, hopefully you can find some part on Ebay... Just take your time and shop, and you will find deals. I see yz400/426 stuff on there all the time. If you can't wait, then buy another bike and sell your 400 later on when its fixed. I wouldn't part it out because you will loose your shirt on it. If the bike is rough otherwise then maybe.... its your call.

You're crazy man. People are making a business of parting out almost brand new bikes because they make a lot more than if they sold it whole. Of course, the engine is the biggest ticket item.

your bike isnt worth rebuilding and so if you find an engine for less than $800 then go for it. otherwise part it out. oh what kind of aftermarket parts do you have? i might be interested.

Sorry, a guy bought the whole thing already to rebuild himself. And I must admit to my yamaha friends, I switched to yellow and got a great deal on a new 06 Suzuki DRZ 400 E. This bike is perfect for me and a lot cheaper that the WR! Ride hard!

Sorry about your bike! That's a rough one.

I would opt for a new one. I have a '99 400f I just rebuilt from the ground up, Race Tech valving/springs, head completely rebuilt and ported, piston/rings, clutch, braided brake lines, alum. sub frame from an 02 426, bigger radiators from a 05 450, etc. I was riding with a buddy and his '06 450f. He talked me into switching for a while, he wanted to see how my bike ran, well a longer story short, his bike, straight out of the box was so much more faster, smoother AND controllable than my was with lots of cash and time invested. I bought an '06 two weeks later. I would however sell my '99.

Your motor is done. You broke the cases. I would guess the carnage goes way beyond that. You are looking about 2-4K retail to get it fixed. You would be better off selling parts (hopefully the top end and cylinder is in good shape) and putting that money into a newer bike.
