My first time under the Knife !!!

Recommended Posts

Hey there fellow TT'ers. Well I have been battling a majorly huge abscess on the left of my back that somehow got infected with something called mersa staff. So for almost 2 weeks now and after 5 days of hospital trips, blood test, cultures, I.V. therapy, and ridiculous amounts of pain medications the hospital told me they were done and for me to go and see a surgeon/skin specialist. So I made the appointment yesterday and went to see him this morning at 9:15. About 9:40 I was in the room and he was taking a look at my back while I was on the couch like examination chair and had asked why they hadn't opened it up some to let the infection/pressure drain. I told him I didn't know, I had wondered the same thing and when I had asked them about doing that they said they had to make sure they knew what it was. 5 Min's later he tells me to roll over to my stomach and for the nurse to get the knife, the local, sterile gloves, towels and the light. Next thing I know I have a needle going through my back about 5 times and then I knife slicing me open. I must say thats one hell of a way to get the job done. I would have thought he would have taken me to the hospital to do this procedure. After all the slicing and dicing was done he stuffed me like a turkey with packing gauze and shipped me home. Now I have to wait till tomorrow and a take the gauze out and see what the hole shows. I am really not looking foreword the seeing the hole left when the gauze comes out. It sure as hell looks pretty big. Ill have some pics up here soon. Its not the best thing to look at I promise, it sure as hell hurt though. It was probably the worst pain I have ever felt in my life.

99% of my pain was from before they cut me open, this thing was friggin huge. It was atleast 3-4 inches in diameter and atleast and inch raised. I couldnt believe they put the numbing shots right into the middle and around the damn thing that was like fire.

My hubby had one removed from the back of his leg -- just below the knee. Was glad to have it gone but it left one heck of a dimple. The bugger was about the size of a ping-pong ball (he got to look at it).

His previous doctor said it was no big deal and to leave it alone. When she left the practice, the main doc looked at it, said the previous doc was lazy (which may have been why she wasn't there anymore) and he removed it in just a few minutes. Funny thing was, hubby's leg was numb and had a terrible time dragging his butt out of the office. Like a good wife, I pulled the truck up to the curb so he didn't have to hobble through the parking lot.

It has filled in but he has a mark when the doc sliced him open.

Sounds huge! Huge enough to put a zipper on it & convert it to a camel back bladder holder! Seriously, hope all is ok now.

Sounds like you had an abscess caused by Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA for short). This is a type of "staph" infection that is resistant to the new line penicillins but it is susceptible to vancomycin (IV) and bactrim. The doctor did an Incision and Drainage (I&D) to drain the pus. You should change that packing at least twice a day and wash the area with soap and water really good with dressing changes. It will heal on its own over the course of a week or two. The gauze that you put into the wound is ribbon-like and th amount inserted will be less each time you pack it. Dont get the stuff in the wound near your child if he has any open wounds and wash your hands thoroughly.

Yep, had the samething about 10 yrs. ago. The size was about as big

as a ping-pong ball. Mr. Doctor I was (or just did not want to spend the

$$$$)I drained it myself(not good and painful too). It came back

and BIG too. So went to the Doc and he did the samething as you, but he

never got the CORE of it. :applause: So it got BIG again in 6 months. Went to diffferent Doc this time and sure enough he did get the Core of it. Man what a lot of pulling he did. Hurt like hell(of course nothing like a total knee or anything)........talking about pain......a total knee was it for me. :applause:

Let see some pics!! :ride:

The antibiotics that they have me on are Bactrum by pill and 900 mg of clemisom (sp) by iv for 4 sessions 8 hrs apart. Today well be taking the packing out and I will get to see the real size of the hole for the first time. The doc told us to take the packing out but not to put anymore back in. Just to leave it open and put a dry dressing on it and go back to see him on tuesday for a follow up. My wife is a nurse and shes concerned that we should repack it instead of leaving the hole open with just a dressing on it. Also he told my wife once we take the packing out to keep the wound open by manipulating the skin from closing up.

It looked like he had too, little red dot, and he looked like a crazy one armed Popeye two days later. Lots of AB and IV AB's too, he actually spent 3 days in the hospitol becuase they werent sure what it was.
