Tires: Need alternatives to my worn out Dunlop K606

Recommended Posts

'01 Yamaha WR426, Dual Sported

My Dunlop K606's on front and rear are getting well worn. The last few months I have considered them average tires until this last week when I did a bunch of riding in Lake Tahoe, CA and the front Dunlop K606 just kept washing out on me, it wouldn't hold a line for anything and off-camber corners were a pain. The rear has performed reasonably well for a dual sport tire with average traction, but the front tire needs to be replaced out of safety concerns, I almost ate crap numerous times because it would not hold a line at all.

Any suggestions for a DOT approved tire to be used 50% street/50% dirt use on hard-packed and rocky trails here in Utah? I willing to try anything on the front that will be better. I may even consider using non-DOT approved tires as long as they have decent treadwear characteristics as I don't have to have my bike inspected for another 11 months.

I have the Kenda K760 on the front and a K270 on the back. I have the same problem you do with the front washing out, but the K270 works great for me on the back. It gives me adequate traction offroad and is great on the pavement.

A little more dirt worthy than the D606 is the MT21 pirelli. I like them more than the 606 but notice they wear faster than the dunlops did. Much better hook up offroad imho. MT18 front is another option.

I'm beginning to realize that there isn't a front that will hook up off road, but still live awhile on pavement. It's like the quest for the holy grail.

I've got almost 2,000 miles on a Brigestone M202 90/100 front (soft terrrain)and it's still hooking up .That's after many street miles and tons of rocky hardpack at Rowher.

Thanks for the info. I have pretty much decided on a Pirelli MT83 Scorpion Pro for the front. I have read some reviews and they all say that the MT83 has great traction for a DOT tire and wears very well on the street.

On the rear, I am still trying to decide between the Michelin AC10, Kenda Trackmaster II (not sure about this cheap tire) and the Pirelli MT21. Any ideas for a good DOT approved rear tire for trail use?

Yes. Currently I have a Pirelli Mt 16 on the rear. It is dot approved and hooks up well in rocks and forest but a little break loosey on the sandstone hardpack kinda stuff. It's great on the hiway and lasts really well. U can get used to your rear sliding around too on the hardpack stuff. Don't forget the Mt 44 front either. This is an excellent Dot front that does it all. Really excells in the nasty stuff. Also I hearing alot of good reviews about the trials tires making good ds tires. They last longer than dirt tires by far and hook up really well on hiway, and out due dirt tires on almost every terrain but cornering and deep mud.
