Trans oil weight ?

Recommended Posts

I changed my trans oil for the second time since i bought my bike in the middle of July. I used Royal Purple Gear oil last time and i wasn't too thrilled from the get go. I was even less thrilled when i loosened my oil bolt and saw what came out. The Royal Purple came out with the consistency of water and burnt black, no wonder my bike had been shifting like garbage the last week. I only had maybe 15 hours on it and that is only simple play/trailriding. I went to my dealer today and bought some Bel-Ray 80W-90 gear saver trans oil. I asked the guy which was the best weight, 75w, 80w, or 85w and he said either 75w or 80w. I went with the 80w, and bought two quarts right away was this the right call weight wise?

my dealer recommended gear saver 80w and ive been using it the past 3 years. going to motorcycle trans oil was probably the best decision. id say 80w would be sufficient but it depends on your bike and how hard you ride it.
