backfire

Recommended Posts

went to start the DRZ today and it would backfire only. Then decided to change the plug. With the plug out thought I would check the fire at the plug wire. When I turned the key on, I got a steady pulse. Sometimes when I cycle the key on and off the pulse will stop. Then the bike will run fine. By pulse, I mean a steady spark about twice a second. Thanks for any info!

Very strange. I have seen this only once but not quite the same as you describe. Pazon is an English aftermarket company that makes a control box to replace points on old English bikes. They say in their troubleshooting guide that if a multiple spark occures it is due to low battery voltage or bad connections. Never seen anything like this on a DRZ. Check out the easy stuff, but my guess is a bad CDI control box and/or one of the pick-up sensor coils next to the flywheel (stator) that controls spark timing.
