How many dents does it take??

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I realize that a lot of you are hardcore thumpers, but i've got a quick question about 2 strokes. Just wondering how big a dent it takes in the expansion pipe till you actually loose a noticeable amount of power? I just got one about the size of my fist in mine which i'm gonna get blown out. But yeah, its always puzzled me...

I had a crazy intelligent mechanic tell me that each 1/2" dent = about 1/2hp loss of power.

Maybe it was a 1/4" dent... I don't know, something like that.

Actually it has been proven that a few dents in the right place actually gains you horsepower. Look at pics of Bubbas factory two stroke 250, you will see dents in his pipe that i am sure were placed there on purpose. Call Pro Circuit, they'll tell you the same thing.

im not saying ur wrong but if that is the case, why wouldnt pro circuit just manufacture a special pipe for bubba? i know that they have made non production silencers especially for certain pros.

That pipe could be specially done for Bubba, i dont know. My thinking is if your factory kawasaki with a rider like bubba and his pipe has dents and it does rob the bike of horsepower, wouldn't they replace it?

If that was true my bike would have negative horsepower.

Double edge sword with that little known phenomenon - the engine only runs well in the opposite direction. But riding in reverse really puts a kink in your neck. On the bright side, it tends to even out the wear on sprockets, tires and tranny gears. So you double the life on many engine parts! Likewise, you can double the oil change interval.

Your riding buddies will freak, and it's a challenge to do a wheelie with front wheel drive

i saw a magazine test where they did a dyno run with perfect conditon pipe vs one that had a good size dent in it. the dyno run with the dent provided more hp.
