DRZ-S digital insterment cluster

During storage I pull the battery out of the bike and put it on a tender. I'm wondering what allows the cluster to remember what the odometer reading is. I'm guessing it has some kind of watch battery or something in it. If so how long is that goint to last? (mines an 01) Maybe the thing just remembers it somehow. Cant imagine Suzuki would be allowed to put out a street legal bike that could conveniently forget the milage by pulling a battery. Does anyone know for sure how it remembers it? Does the cluster have a battery I should be thinking about changing?

It has non-volitale memory for the mileage. Basically, it retains a value even when powered off. Baring damage, it will retain the value indefinietely. No internal battery. Cars with electronic odometers work the same way.

Figured it had some kind of permenant memory. Good to know I dont have to worry about a second battery.

Think about it like the memory for a digital camera: it is stored even when a battery isn't connected to the flash card.

I thought somebody posted that there was a button cell in there?

Probably not, if it did, you could take it out and erace the odometer.
