Finally finished rebuilding my 81 XR200R

Recommended Posts

I bought the side covers from a salvage yard I found online. http://www.jeffscycles.com. They cost more than I thought they were worth, but this stuff is getting hard to find in good shape. They were a bit faded so I sanded them down and painted them with outdoor patio furniture paint. They didn't come out to bad. Time will tell how well the paint sticks.

As far as the forks go, I got a complete front end from a 84 xr250. It bolted right up with no problem as long as you use the xr250 tripple clamp.

It looks like you'll have some work on your project too. Yours looks in better condition than mine was when I got. Good luck

Thanks for the info.

I've already purchased the forks and front wheel from an 85 XR250R (84 and 85 were the same) and am hunting for a 84-85 triple clamp and caliper.

I just got my forks and front wheel via UPS today. The auction was for fork tubes but when I opened the package the triple clamps where in the box too! Now all I need is the caliper and bracket.

Anybody parting out an 84 or 85 XR250?

I'll keep looking at your pics for encouragement.

just keep how much you spent to yourself, I don't want to know

It wasn't that much because I did most of the work myself. The most expensive part was the cam kit, about $320.00.

Wow Hawkeye that looks awesome. Once I get my bike to run then I get to do all of that look pretty stuff. What year tank and seat are those? I know that seat is not of the 81-83 variety and that how I want my seat to look. Did you go ahead and weld new tabs on the frame for a newer tank? Your bike really looks awesome. Mine will not look that good at first. Where did you get your graphix for the tank at? Man that is so awesome. Seeing yours really has helped me want to do the best I can on mine to make it look good. I am going to do a CR front end on mine but that 250 front end looks good. Give us an update on how that front end works suspension wise. What is that number plate from? Man I have a lot of questions. I am in awe over your bike it looks awesome.

Now I am going to go look at this other guys thread to see his XR. He should also check out my thread. http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=392494 on my XR build. ganshert make sure you read my thread, your bike is in almost as bad of a condition as mine but check mine out. It was even spray painted yellow, plastics and all. I started a new thread combing all of our threads for others to see and maybee see what we are all doing. it is located here http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4258546#post4258546

Hey fordfreak300, The tank and seat are the stock 81 items. The seat had been modified by the previous owner. It was a kit they made awhile back to add the foam extension to the front. If you look at the before pics of the seat, you can see that it's the same seat. I tried to use a 84 tank but it won't fit due to the location of the side tubes of the frame. There just wasn't enough room for it. As far as the graphics go, they are I believe either CR250 or CRF450 2004 graphics. I just cut them to what I thought looked good.

The front number plate is from a CRF230 I think? All I did to mount it was to use longer bolts that hold the fender on. The plate has two tabs on the back that almost perfectly match the bolt pattern of the fender mount on the tripple clamp. Just a little cut here and a little trim there and your done.

Hawkeye,

Sweet looking bike.

What grind Megacycle cam did you get? Any other motor mods? I'm looking at doing something similar, but I'm still debating on which cam. I don't want their full race cam (-40), and their mid/top grind (-20) sound good, but I don't want to loose too much on the bottom.

Kepp us posted on how it works for you.

Hey cohl,

I went with the 143-00. I thought about the 143-20 but I didn't want to have to upgrade the piston and valve springs. The kit went in real easy. The 143-00 is suppose to increase mid range power and torque and have a nice smooth idle. So far I've only tested the bike around the block so I can't really tell how much power it has. I was going to go to hollister and give it a good test this Sat but I think I'm coming down with a something so I'll probably stay home and start on my next project, a 96 XR400.

Glad to hear that you got it running fordfreak. Maybe someday, since we both live in Ca, I'll see you up on the hills riding around. I'd love to see some more pics of your bike.

Well it took about seven months and a few hundred dollars to complete this rebuild, not to mention all the labor, but I think it was worth it. I got this bike for free, it had a blown engine and needed painting and well I could go on and on. Look at the before and after pics, they say it all. Let me know what you guys think.

Keep riding and have fun.

I’m not a Honda guy. But you did an excellent job on that bike. It looks perfect. VERY well done. I would be proud to own that.

I would love to do something like that. I’m not sure what year/make/model I would do but something old. How much money did it take you to get it to that point? If you don’t want to share I totally understand.

I'll have more pics of mine soon. I t is not totally complete I am just getting it ridable right now. Then I will do all the looks pretty stuff. I still have to get a right side number plate. Any chance you still have that one with the hole in it?

I think I have over $900 invested. I'd have to find all my receipts to know for sure.

Sorry, I gave it away to someone on craigs list last year. You could try the place I got my covers from http://www.jeffscycles.com. Just make sure you give them the correct year of your bike. They sent me 84 covers in error and I gave them the correct year. They replaced them with no problems but I had to wait the extra week for the replacements to arrive.

Hawkeye,

I think I have over $900 invested. I'd have to find all my receipts to know for sure.

I've been told it's a bad omen to add up the money you spend on your bike

Even if it doesn't bring you bad luck, it will probably make you sick. I know I stopped adding things up and immediately throw out the receipts unless I need them for a warranty.

I agree, that's why I took a guessed at the amount. I didn't keep all of my receipts, just the important ones.
