Need help with 94 ATK 605DS

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a 1994 ATK605DS. I've read posts on here about the importance of changing the timing belt but I dont know where to buy the belt or how much tension to put on the belt when I do replace it. I didnt get any manuals with the bike so I'm kinda in the dark on this.

I have checked the belt and it looks OK but seems a little loose. The bike had been sitting for about 10 years so I know it would be a good idea to replace it. Also I noticed when I test road the bike that when I shut it off, it back fired through the carb. Could this be caused by a slight shift in the timing due to a loose timing belt? The bike ran great otherwise. I'm not going to ride it anymore until I get the belt replaced.

Where is a good place to buy a timing belt, new airfilter and some kind of manual? Also I replaced the fork seals but have no idea what level the fork oil should be at. I was told later models are 90mm from the top but is that correct for a 94?

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm new to this site and I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum.

Here's a link to the current Bullitin Board where you can get a ton of help from other ATK owners:

And here is a link to the now closed BB, there is still a lot of great info Archived there:

Thanks for the information. I was able to get a Rotax engine repair manual and a timing belt from Moto-exotica. Very nice friendly people there.

I still need some help from someone with a 94 605 that can confirm the correct fluid level on the front forks. My local shop that originaly sold the bike but has since washed their hands of ATK says 90mm from top of tube. Moto -Exotica told me 130mm from the top. I plan on going with the 130mm but thought I would ask if anyone out there has a 94 with the Whitepower suspension manual that can confirm that level?

Just go with what Dan told you. He knows ATKs pretty damn well. I will confirm he is right. I have a 99 with WP suspension.
