Street-legal 02 XR400?

Hey everyone. I'm a total neophyte with this stuff but I just bought an 02 XR400 with a fully funtional Baja Kit. I've since heard that you can't make these street-legal in California, but I've now seen two with plates: one advertized on Craig's list, one parked outside a restaurant... (couldn't find the owner).

Anyone know if I can in fact register this thing, or do I have to have a special relationship with someone at DMV?

From what I understand, most people go through a couple of different DMV places before they are able to find one that will give them a plate. I think there's a sticky on plating bikes in Cali in the Dual Sport forum (towards the bottom of the list of all of the forums).

I know it's been discussed before, I just don't know exactly where to look. You also might want to try to search the Southwest forums.

Thanks, milje, I will check those out. It's ironic, on my 85 XR basicaly nothing that works, signal-wise, light-wise, and the mirrors are taped down... but it has a plate and is registered. Oh well. -drk
