Muffler packing, stock or aftermarket?

Recommended Posts

After 135 hours I figured it was time to at least check if not replace my muffler packing. I've not noticed it getting any louder, but it's so quiet stock, a few db rise would be hard to hear, and my buddies bikes are all louder than mine.

The packing was in pretty good shape with only one area that had 'burned' through close to the header end.

My dealer (lame) doesn't stock the packing but can order it, reluctanly, but just recommended using any aftermarket packing.

The stock packing is much more dense and durable looking than any aftermarket packing I've found...the can is also a few inches longer than most.

Temporarily I've packed it with standard wall fiberglass, and it sounds about them same as stock, maybe a little louder...but I know it won't last long.

What are you all using, stock or some other (better) packing?

I think the good stuff is Silentsport packing- lasts a long time and very easy to use. Take a look in Dennis Kirk or Kevin's Cycle. Also, RaceTool sells it. Good luck!
