headlight not working properly

Recommended Posts

My 87 xl250r headlight has gone wonky I was riding home when the high beam light flashed a couple times and then went out. The elements in the headlight glow orange but will not get bright enough to throw light. If I change the switch from hi to low beams the element will change in the headlight but it still gets the same dull orange glow. I have cleaned the connectors to the headlight and cleaned the headlight switch contacts.

I also disconnected the A.C. regulator and cleaned the contacts in it as well as i could( slid some 320 grit paper in between the male connectors). If I connect the headlight to a battery directly it will light brightly but I am lost as to my next step. Any ideas?

Thanks

Dale

On my 94 XR250R the lighting side of the stator was bad and appeared the same way - toaster element orange headlight bulb.
